so we are gearing up. literally. (an un-supervised brandon somehow managed to spend a $300 gift card to sears on camping stuff, when they point blank told us they only carry camping stuff online now.. hmm) is a hatchet really necessary, or what about an ipod docking station. anyhow, i digress. the real reason i'm getting this out there is cause i need your help.
picture it; the eurovan (how 'camp' is that) loaded down with sleeping bags (one princess of course), the costco 2 room tent, lots of unnecessary food, a camp stove, those cool camping dishes , ice, beer... you know, the basics. the vans ready, everyone ready to head to the great outdoors... majestic redwoods, refreshing ocean breezes, creeks, rocks, lizards, the smell of campfire.. your with me right? now here we are, kids in carseats, out the door, in the van. here's wherein lies the dilemma. its a 2 hour drive to big sur, do we, or do we not bring the dvd player. it sort of feels like a cardinal sin... what would you do?

my vote is no. spend time singing and talking. wish we could come. hope you guys stay dry. the foreacst looks pretty good.
oh that's tough. mike and i are big on not doing the dvd thing (for as long as we can stand it) in the car because we grew up doing road trips and want our children to be able to enjoy them without a movie. BUT, there comes a time, i'm sure, when every one would be much happier--and arrive at your destination still enjoying each other--if the ride was made more pleasant by a diverting movie. it's a judgment call!
Oh, what would I do? ANYTHING TO SURVIVE. Bring the damn thing...hide it under the seat and bring it out if necessary.
Jenn
ps-I like Drea's comment. If that works for Noah, that is amazing. Bubba would die if we spent time singing and talking for two hours. If Bubba ain't happy, ain't no body happy!
Jenn-You should see what I do while driving to keep Mr. Noahroo happy. I just didn't think that a dvd player was necessary on a CAMPING trip....oh shoot gotta go, Noah is fussing cause I forgot to put the Baby Einstein dvd on repeat.
One more thing....Holls you'd better be back in time for volleyball on Sunday!
long car rides without a dvd player is like hunting without a gun. sure, you might be able to kill a bear with your bare hands, but there would be a lot less crying if you shoot the bear.
Am I wrong in thinking the roughing it doesn't start until you get there?
DVDs acceptable until the roughing it begins...it's pretty much the only way Linda and I get to talk on a trip.
in an ideal world, I'd say don't do it... but then I only have an 11-month old so what do I know!!
By the way, love that you guys have a EuroVan! We totally love those.
I say don't take it and spending the time singing like Drea suggested; but I don't have any kids, so what do i know!
BUT, if you do take it, don't turn the thing on except for the car ride!
Have so much fun. I wish we were still only 2 hours away from Big Sur.
wow. great response guys.
soderins- singing really? have you heard me to pews over- its not good for anyone- even kids.
kristen/anna/nicole- i wish i was one of those moms that avoided movie,s at all costs for kids, but really i am totally in survival mode most days! maybe with the next one uh?
avilas/zalamea- i hear ya.
pollards- couldn't have worded it better si. nice one.
so the end result? no dvd player. it ended up being fine- on the way there they both fell asleep after about an hour, and on the way back they fell asleep right away the whole trip!!! so it was awesome. look for a good ol camping post coming up. we had an awesome time!!!!
holly,
saw you in the EuroVan on S. Higuera today...at least i think it was you. seems like the Vdub survived too.
Someone once told me that sleep was created so we would fall in love with our kids again every night (or something like that)
I love weird sayings because there is so much truth in them ;)
hey coach z, how come i can't look at your blog? i think we've come along way don't you?
as for the sleep thing- that sure is the truth- even 10 minutes of them sleeping is enough for me to forgive all trespasses!
yes, it's me. sorry for not visiting sooner, but alas, i've been quite busy researching elevator history, disrespecting the engineering profession, and giving birth to my own blog.
regarding your latest cardinal sin, IMO it's ok to bring the digital video device, as long as you bring along a copy of "the fountainhead" to show your kids that there is nothing more important in life than architects, and movies about them...
because contrary to tina fey, "architects get stuff done!!"
let the games begin.....
